Built by an educator who loves playing what he hears—and helping others discover that same joy!

Great fit if your child…

  • Loves modern pop, classical, or worship music and wants to actually play it

  • Gets bored with slow method books

  • Wants to play confidently around others

Not the best fit if you want…

  • Purely classical, exam-only training

  • “Just follow the book” teaching

  • A one-size-fits-all lesson plan

“I spent years learning and teaching music in settings where students could follow the page (at least those who stuck with it!), but they struggled to hear patterns, improvise, or play without written instructions. I created SBS to give students a different starting point: real songs, practical theory, attuned ears, and opportunities to make music with others. The goal is not to avoid challenge. It is to make the challenge meaningful.”

- Josiah, Founder & Lead Educator

Most lessons teach kids to read music. We teach them to make music.

A common sight-first approach

  • Start with drills and worksheets

  • Progress depends on reading speed

  • Kids memorize songs, then forget them

  • Practice feels like homework

We believe…

> Music is sound before it is symbol.

> Theory should help students play music, not merely label it.

> The best learning path prepares each student for the music they want to make.

Sound Before Sight

  • Start with real songs and patterns

  • Kids learn how music works by ear

  • They can play songs in multiple keys

  • Practice feels rewarding (and fun!)

  • For me.. it’s seeing the love and passion she has developed in learning the piano. Its one thing to learn it, but it’s a whole other level when you see the love for the keys. She has truly taken piano and embraced it for HERSELF.

  • I'm impressed with how everything has run...He plays all the time at home, and doesn't need to be told to practice because he enjoys it so much...It's a great fit for him!

  • She actually felt comfortable video recording herself!

Meet Josiah (Founder)

I grew up learning music the slow way - working my way through music notes, memorizing songs out of the book, and never feeling motivated to practice. I built Sound Before Sight to give kids a better experience: real music, meaningful practice, and improvisatory skills that will last a lifetime.

Kind teaching. Clear structure. Real progress.

“I was born with music inside me - it was a necessity for me, like food or water.”

— Ray Charles
